Notes from a message to Green Bottom Baptist Church, LeSage, WV on 8-30-1992

by Jonathan Spurlock
(Holts Summit, MO)

Note: the material to follow was prepared by my late grandfather, Rev. Freddie Spurlock. I transcribed this the best I could from his original notes, left in his Bible, and did some minor editing when I thought it might be necessary.

Excerpts from an address to Green Bottom Baptist Church, LeSage, WV

Occasion: Homecoming Service, Sunday, August 30, 1992

As delivered by Rev. Freddie Spurlock (now deceased)

I shall read to you a rather lengthy Scripture today found in the Book of Psalms, ch. 139:

1st I have been blessed by the Lord to live a lengthy age. In this life (I am) now entering into the evening tide of life (with my) companion of 62 years (plus) by my side.

Many faithful friends have passed on.

2nd This Book tells us on many occasions of a friend who never leaves us nor forsakes us (Hebrews ch. 13, verse 5).

The Lord spoke unto Joshua, chapter 1, of His presence, never to leave him (Joshua) alone.

3rd In Daniel ch. 3 we find Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, mad as a hornet, having 3 men of God cast into a red-hot furnace. As he peeked into the furnace, lo and behold, there were 4!

4th Daniel ch. 6, verses 16-22, Daniel was cast into a den of hungry lions all night and the next morning came out without a scratch.

As you open the door of the refrigerator and look therein, turn on the spigot and fill your cup with cold water to quench your thirst.

(When you) wake from sleep in the morning, rise up and place your feet on the floor, do you always pause and say, “Thank You dear Lord for Your love and concern”?

When David twirled that sling, and the stone took a beeline (then) landed between the eyes of that Philistine giant, who was present to direct the shot that laid him to rest?

Many, many times the roadblocks Satan placed before you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, (were) moved out of your way before you and you never knew about it.

My friends today let me tell you this: you who know JESUS CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR are the most precious people on this earth. Nothing or no one can harm you God Almighty Himself approves of it. You recall, the Lord God Himself told Satan (Job ch. 1, verse 12), “all Job has is in thy power but upon himself put not thy hand (paraphrased from the KJV)”.

Eph. Ch. 1, v 13 (says) after you have trusted JESUS CHRIST , “ . . .ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (KJV)”.

John 10:27-30, KJV: “27 (Jesus said) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one.”

Scripture quotations taken from the King James Version of the Bible (KJV).
