What Is True Love

by Richard A. Kent

I have one simple question to ask; One question that has burned in the hearts of all mankind at one time or another. That question is - What is true love? A word so confused by society that often the true meaning of such word takes years to truly understand.

To find an undying, unconditional love takes most individuals through a journey lasting a lifetime. We search the planet for the one that will touch us not only in body, but also in spirit and soul. Can we really find true love? Does it still exist, and would we recognize it if we had it?

The Word of God speaks much on the topic of love. One scripture comes to mind right away, and that is – God is love (1John 4:8) but how can we define love in more detail? In Corinthians 13:4 we read: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Unfortunately we don’t have a “how to” book on what real love is when we are born. It is something that is revealed to us as we learn and grow. If we grow in good things and in truth, then I believe true love will also find its way into our lives. If we choose the bad things, and deny the truth, then I believe we can very easily get a love than is far less than true.

There are of course many different kinds of love. There is Agape love which means “Godly love”. This is the love that boggles the sinners mind. It is the love that is totally without question and is unconditional. It loves us for what we can be, rather than what we currently are.

It sees into the depths of our being, and not simply our outward expression. It is the love that neither man nor woman can take away. It just is and always will be.

There is also “Eros” love. This is the love that a man or woman feels towards each other in passionate terms. This is love is powerful, yet sadly in our society today seems to come and go as the wind.

Another form of love is “Philos” love. This is the love we have for our friends and people that are close to us. It is the love that makes us run to a hurt friend to comfort and lift them up. A special bond that is so real, yet unlike the Eros love of a couple.

As we see, there are many different kinds of love. I believe in order to find true love we must begin to understand what love is - Amen. We will begin to truly understand the matters of the heart and soul, and the differences between the love of man, and the love of God.

We will be able to decipher the feelings within us by knowing the differences. Gaining a better knowledge of God and his love, by having a good grasp on what is love.

Do you seek love today? Do you feel that no matter what you do, there is yet an emptiness within you? That within you there, burns a fire that is unquenchable. Your quest for it has so far led you wanting more. I invite you to experience the true love of God.

An invitation to an understanding that many will never have. Don’t know where to find it? Simply stop, look within yourself, believe in something greater than yourself, and reach out in blind faith. Cry out to God, and he will fill you with a love that is like no other.
